Wedding Styles through the decades
I just received an email from Shutterfly saying “take a look back at this day 14 years ago” and it was of a wedding we filmed and photographed in Cape Town in South Africa. This led me on a fun trip down a rabbit hole of weddings we have shot through the years and had me in fits of giggles at the styles of some of the colour choices and bridesmaids dresses, and even the choice of flowers, groommen’s waistcoats and cakes! The 2010’s was a decade of rule-breaking, regardless, fads and trends go out of style, even within a decade! Only the classics remain timeless—like diamonds, pearls, or a perfectly tailored tux.
I look back at our marketing and see that we sold ourselves as “traditional, reportage and creative wedding photographers” (I think we still do describe our style as such!) but looking at some of the “creative” wedding photography we were applying is somewhat hysterical and rather questionable! We’ve since upped our game and our camera equipment - some of these photographs were taken on Canon 20D and 30D’s and edited on Photoshop, we now shoot on mirrorless Sony’s and edit with Lightroom, we created Wedding Photo Albums on Shutterfly and added curlicue fonts and descriptive embelishments! Now we are (slightly) more grown up and very much wiser and utilize the services of the best wedding album providers in the world.
Who on earth decided it was a good idea to spot color the photographs - black and white with a spot color of the flowers (usually orange and red gerberas!)? or to take the photographs at a wonky angle and forego the horizon line? And I found a series of photos of our creative “Just the Two of Us” with the bride and groom hitchhiking on a bend in the road! I can only apologise to our brides and grooms of the time now, but I guess, it was the wedding trend of the day, and therefore their wedding photo memories will remind them of the trends and styles of the day!
This being said, nothing seems to date quicker than a bridesmaid’s dress and accessories… Here are a couple of the giggle-worthy fashions and styles from 15 years ago - let us know in the comments if you think any of these wedding trends or colors should make a come back! Oh and Happy 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th wedding anniversary to these wonderful brides and grooms of ours!
